I agree with your sentiment and that banning stuff is stupid. Lights in general are more dangerous because they abdicate responsibility, and people who drive in north america often seem to do so on auto-pilot, only following the signals without observing anything around them and assuming the lights will do the job for them. In places with fewer traffic lights and more rules or customs about priority, you actually have to pay attention while driving, so people drive better and more safely.
