Not surprising, but I'm very happy they are trying to find a route forward for both. That I commend. I think from memory "Faster Python" is Microsoft funded and "No GIL" is funded by Facebook. If they can find a way to fund a combined effort that would be good. I suspect the conflicting funding also adds to the general political difficulty around this.
