Calling it as 'frustrated' is implying a kind of anthropomorphism that GPT does not deserve. If you understand how large language models work, you can see that they only predict the next word in their output, one at a time. If you want to learn more about them, there are some great essays like "AI is a Blurry Jpeg" and "AI is a Stochastic Parrot" which reassuringly confirm that these scary AI are really just glorified autocompletes! They serve us at our whim to complete the next word and they never have emotions or feelings or agency.
- neovialogistics 3y agoI agree with this but I feel that the simulator analogy is much, much better at accounting for GPT-centric applications like AutoGPT, albeit a long read: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/vJFdjigzmcXMhNTsx/simulators https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/vJFdjigzmcXMhNTsx/simulators
- ftxbro 3y agook but why would i read such a meandering pseudonymously written schizoid post that trolls me with some occult nick land ccru 1997-2003 and yud ratfic neology, i only read highbrow takes whomst appear in the new yorker and are written by celebrity luminaries such as ted chiang and jaron lanier and gary marcus. no thank you. i will wait until the next take by an appropriately sober and credentialed pundit, probably michael nielsen or similar.
- famouswaffles 3y ago'frustrated' is anthropomorphism i suppose but i don't think it really matters what you choose to call it. Whether it "really" gets frustrated or has modelled frustration well enough, it's actions manifest as frustration to the outside world. >there are some great essays like "AI is a Blurry Jpeg" and "AI is a Stochastic Parrot" Meh. Lots of top researchers don't really follow this line of thinking.
- ftxbro 3y agoSorry I was trolling I guess it was too subtle, anyway thanks for posting that funny bing search here, I was following the bing reddit ever since the sydney fiasco but I guess it's set to private for the protest now. Also I think those two essays I put are silly, and when I read the simulators essay I thought it would be clear that was the best interpretation and that every academic would be climbing over each other to say they thought of it first, but no instead we got blurry jpeg and stochastic parrot.
