Like, at no point in everyday life does anything like that happen. Meanwhile, there doesn't seem to be many studies showing any need for anything like that to stay healthy, and lots of people make it to 90s and 100s without high impact or high intensity stuff.
Most sports seem like they must exist mostly because of masochism! Every time I do anything physical besides walking and just the level of excercise you get doing projects with an active job I always regret it.
I used to be interested in sports as a teen... but... that was mostly just because I thought girls would be more interested, but plenty of people play sports and that doesn't happen.
All the sports seem to either be dangerous, or not that popular!
With all the concerns about people not getting enough excercise, I'm surprised none of the video game companies or something have made an effort to design a new sport, with the help of doctors to make sure it won't wreck anyone's joints.
I wonder what the top game designers would say about a new sport for those of us who have zero interest in the old "Expose yourself to danger and get experience with life" mindset that people who play football often seem to have?
- giardini 3y agoWhat happened to your hands while playing volleyball? Never had any problems but know they can happen (broken fingers, tendon injuries, eye injuries, sliding on a Portugese Man O' War, hitting a rock and dying, etc. - life as usual!8-)). Unless you stress your muscles and joints you will not gain strength, flexibility and coordination. You'll have the body of E.T., but none of his psychokinetic abilities. FWIW lots of games and sports are derivatives of warfare and what you call "masochism" is part of the game. Some games (martial arts, fencing, etc.) are a part of warfare. Limiting sports to walking would be a "bridge too far" for most people. OTOH you're free to exercise as you wish and walking is by far the best solo exercise.
- eternityforest 3y agoIt seemed to make every point that had ever been injured hurt for like, an hour, starting within within minutes. I also heard plenty of stories of a lot worse injuries.... Almost everyone I know who plays the "heavier" sports, or lifts weights more than just very casually, seems to have plenty of injury stories and they don't immediately seem to have any fewer health concerns(Although most of that is stuff that takes 20 years to see the results) compared to people who do dance or walking or swimming (Not that I can do that one, I just sink!). They're often stronger, but it doesn't seem to actually be that helpful since they have more pain in daily life than their slightly less strong peers, and it's not like strength or endurance is ever the limiting factor in daily life for most(Flexibility sometimes is, but it doesn't seem like the most enthusiastic sports/fitness people are any more likely to have that than the more casual people). I do know a few people who do martial arts, and those seem pretty fun and not inordinately dangerous, at least not compared to football and things like that.
