The DOT certification is to be enforced by the manufacturer, the opposite of SNELL and ECE. There have been many examples of DOT helmets tested at random that did not respect certification. Snell isn't all that better, as they have a double standard, with one of them being mich weaker. It is generally recommended to stick to ECE and FIM. I wonder how much this weights into motorcycle deaths - since most of them involve the helmet.
