Chinese Institutions Dominate Ranking of Quality Research Output by Nature Index
- senttoschool 3y agoMore strikingly, Chinese universities absolutely dominate Chemistry: https://www.nature.com/nature-index/institution-outputs/generate/chemistry/global/all https://www.nature.com/nature-index/institution-outputs/gene... By my count, 18/20 top universities for chemistry research is in China. The first US university in chemistry is MIT at 23. It makes sense to me. The top students in the US are disproportionately Chinese. China has 1.4 billion Chinese people.
- defrost 3y agoChina for some decades has been the bulk supplier of precursor, near finished, and often final pharmaceuticals thanks to the US (and Europe) being happy to outsource "the boring stuff" in drug production. China and its trade shows have been a one stop shop for bespoke drug synthesis and off brand matching of prescription drugs. It takes good science education to support a hyper industrial scale (supplying the US, Europe, the US, and other countries) drug production pipeline.
- senttoschool 3y agoInteresting you say the "boring" stuff. I'm a believer that a lot of the recent China vs West animosity is due to China moving up the value chain. Yes, China received the lower value, boring work. Now they want to move up in the the value chain and the west is saying no no. You have to continue to be our cheap labor and cheap supplier. Leave the designs, services, high tech to us. A good example of this is the Huawei 5G debacle.
