This is likely merely cultural misunderstanding. I've noticed that when Americans come here to the Netherlands, they take offence at the things that natives don't. Dutch people don't take offence at those things because there's no need for pretence around caring for people, it's genuine, and a given. Without the _show_ though, it looks like rudeness to Americans.
