- damnesian 3y agoIt's only natural at the beginning of a new technology's arc to embrace it for amusements both titillating and frightening. Like a circus sideshow, we take the mundanity of everyday life and run it through filters of exaggeration and juxtaposition in order to distinguish it from everyday reality. The cliche that in 1896, Parisians on the bleeding edge of public film exhibition ran screaming from the approaching train short subject "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat," appears to be partially apocryphal but what is well-established is all early films were short and sensationalist, designed to cause a stir and keep attention firmly focused on the new phenomenon. It took nearly 20 years for the feature-length film to be invented and become a standard form. So maybe by 2040 we'll look back and think of experiments like this as quaint and silly.
