I like these war stories — the worst bugs aren't solved by tools or tests, but by semi-desperate flashes of insight after you've been tearing your hear out for hours. It's great when the very foundations of what you're used to trusting (eg: an allocator, the kernel, your compiler, etc) are where the bugs lie.
- codyd51 3y agoThank you! Indeed, more than once over the course of introducing this new PMM I felt a sense of desperation as bugs surfaced due to an “I don’t know what I changed” change. Often, the answer is “nothing special”, and extremely minor pieces of happenstance (such as the exact layout of address space requested by the kernel ELF) lead to something breaking way down the ladder. It's really nice to hear that you enjoyed it!
