Ask HN: Do you use docx or odt when you save a word document? Why?
- pwg 3y agoI don't use word, I use LibreOffice, so I save as odt.
- pyeri 3y agoODT and LibreOffice. Open Source, Freedom, Open Mindedness wherever possible.
- Decabytes 3y agoBut docx is also an open source standard. It was accepted by the Ecma International standards committee as office Open XML in 2008. Microsoft also pledged in their Microsoft Open Specification Promise to... > Microsoft irrevocably promises not to assert any Microsoft Necessary Claims against you for making, using, selling, offering for sale, importing or distributing any implementation to the extent it conforms to a Covered Specification So it seems to be on the same ground as the odt format
- heofhdosh 3y agoMicrosoft will never promise to not include new, proprietary, pieces to one previously open standard. if you are too young to know this, read some history on the company. now start using odt already.

- armchairhacker 3y agodocx, because it will only be opened in word so there’s no point. Ideally I’d write everything in markdown or LaTeX or Typst, but if I’m working with people who use Google Docs or Word, I use Google Docs or Word
