To be honest, this happens with every other technology. When the railways came, you can imagine what the horse and pony carriage riders must have felt about their employment. When commercial airplanes came, the railway engineers must have felt the same.
And it's not as if none of those new technologies had any disaster potential. Those disasters indeed came to be and we kept improvising in turn as we learned from our mistakes.
While it's true that AI/ML has a great potential for disasters, it's equally true that we are becoming more and more aware about it. If anything AI related becomes part of mass consumption, rest assured that regulations and policy guidelines will also come accordingly to prevent any abuse or negative effects of the technology.
