Another Warning Letter from A.I. Researchers and Executives
- gigama 3y agoWe are at a pivotal moment in the development of A.I. What began as a fun way to generate beautiful images and engage in entertaining conversations with hallucinating chatbots has ballooned in potential in mere months, resulting in a technology so powerful that we are now terrified of the impact it could have. So, while we continue down a capitalist path of throwing endless resources at the development of these humanlike systems at breakneck speeds, basically guaranteeing our own demise, we are also taking a moment to write, sign, and publish this very important letter that will hopefully absolve us of any responsibility for our own actions, while simultaneously allowing us to say, “It’s the government’s fault,” “I told you so,” and “¯\_(ツ)_/¯.”
- pyeri 3y agoTo be honest, this happens with every other technology. When the railways came, you can imagine what the horse and pony carriage riders must have felt about their employment. When commercial airplanes came, the railway engineers must have felt the same. And it's not as if none of those new technologies had any disaster potential. Those disasters indeed came to be and we kept improvising in turn as we learned from our mistakes. While it's true that AI/ML has a great potential for disasters, it's equally true that we are becoming more and more aware about it. If anything AI related becomes part of mass consumption, rest assured that regulations and policy guidelines will also come accordingly to prevent any abuse or negative effects of the technology.
