The Pound Sterling used have the top spot. And not particularly long ago. I can remember a time when I bought Travellers' Cheques denominated in Pounds Sterling.
80-120 years appears to be the maximum a Reserve Currency stays on top. The USD will be an 'also ran' within the lifetime of most of the readers here.
