I enjoy old books because their "unique qualities" are likely to change my mind; to alter how I think. Even boring old books are different and add something to my consciousness which I cannot find elsewhere. Editing old books, occasionally even adding a new preface, can harm this kind of rich pleasures, turning them into monotonous blankness. And the "activism" may not even be very effective.
