I think blaming shodan/etc is incorrect - shodans rise in popularity coincided with the rise of cheap, fast bandwidth at VPS providers enabling you to scan real fuckin fast. It’s much more efficient to just do “zmap | ./exp” than it is to query shodan, get a limited amount of targets, etc.
