This is using something called Sitewap notation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siteswap https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siteswap Each throw is represented by a number. Roughly speaking, a number X in the pattern implies that the throw is the "normal" throw when juggling X balls. So a normal pattern for 5 balls is just "5". One necessary but insufficient property is that the numbers in the pattern have to average to the number of balls you're juggling.
