How to buy a social network, with Tumblr CEO Matt Mullenweg (2022)

I love that Matt and co decided to get tumblr and keep it going. Of course I wish it would go back to the (almost completely) uncensored version that is once was, although it's still not as prude as it could easily be pushed to be. I still have not found a quick way to make a tumblr clone using wordpress (dot org version) - one would think with wordpressMU / multi-site it would take very little to clone the theme of tumblr for WP, and make a one click backend that mirrors tumblr's front-upload and admin. Perfect thing for a buddpyress perhaps. At least it was easy to export tumblr and import into WP. So kudos to tumblr and automattic.

Now buy a functioning search model so joining Tumblr isn't a gigantic hurdle of useless tags and filters.

Highly recommend Decoder, the podcast of which this is a transcript of. Matt Mullenweg was on it earlier in 2022 also https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/15/22977857/wordpress-tumblr-simplenote-internet-automattic-matt-mullenweg-interview https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/15/22977857/wordpress-tumblr...

I know Tumblr is staffed with good people, it's just a shame that it took that censorship hit when Reddit just kept rolling with the punches and managed to just steam right through most of the trouble with only a few trimmings of the extreme content around the edges. My girlfriend had an edgy Tumblr last year and she got permabanned for a post she made. Seemingly even the execs at Tumblr don't have access to your data after your account gets deep-fried as they couldn't even see what it was she posted that got her cooked - so they couldn't reverse the decision as there was nothing left. Was a huge bummer for her as it was her main outlet and put her in a real sad funk.

Agreed, whatever they set up (in the past? currently??) to auto-mod is insanely capricious. My six year old account, with three blogs, got completely deleted with ZERO notification. They just go to the 404 page, I can't reuse the names either. What a joke!

Should be tagged with [2022].

Step 1: Do not. (I'm sure there's a successful example somewhere, and in fact Tumblr may be about the best one, in that it hasn't actually collapsed or anything, but it rarely ends well...)
