I don't know if what's happening at Reddit is enough to kill it to be honest.
A few subreddits I subscribe to (San Francisco, videos, etc) all went dark, claiming to be doing so "indefinitely". Effectively you cannot access those subreddits even to look at archived things.
The Reddit staff/leadership can just decide to un-darken those subs and I'll "cross the picket lines". I suspect most are like me. That's the honest truth.
I'm already annoyed by the darkening of these subs and would like Reddit staff to just make the executive decision to un-darken them. If the mods want to resign from moderating in protest then do so, if that leaves AI moderators or harsher requirements to qualify for posting then so be it.
But don't darken the sub and make it blocked to everyone.
- ImPostingOnHN 3y agoif you don't like people suspending you (and/or everyone else) from their subreddit, you can always create your own, or deal with the root cause of why they're doing it > don't darken the sub and make it blocked to everyone don't tell people what to do with their subreddit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- GlacierFox 3y agoTry not to embolden yourself by claiming you're on some sort of virtual picket line after a weak-ass post like this :S.

But it’s not about lurkers. Who is going to moderate those subs and prevent them from turning into a cesspool of spam and other less savory content? Reddit is dependent on literally tens of thousands of volunteer moderators. Un-darkening subreddits is surely going to piss them off even more. Without moderators they can close their doors as no advertiser is going to want to put their brand name next to an endless stream of spam and filth.
