> MIDI 2.0 is a major overhaul to the original MIDI protocol that is widely-used by musical devices.
Reshuffling that sentence for clarity:
The original MIDI protocol is widely-used by musical devices. MIDI 2.0 is a major overhaul to the original protocol.
- ygouzerh 3y agoThank you for the TLDR !
- ChuckNorris89 3y agoI'm not a native English speaker but the original sentence was equally clear to me. Can you enlighten me why you had to 'fix' it? Does it now match the rules set by Oxford and Cambridge or something?
- coldtea 3y agoI think in the original the "that is widely used" was ambiguous, as to whether it refers to MIDI or MIDI 2.0.

- earthnail 3y ago> MIDI 2.0 is a major overhaul to the original MIDI protocol that is widely-used by musical devices The word “that” can refer to both original MIDI and the overhaul MIDI 2.0: MIDI 2.0 is a major overhaul that is widely used by musicians. …the original MIDI protocol that is widely used by musicians.
- dustypotato 3y agoIt was already pretty clear from the context as a new protocol wouldn't be widely used by musical devices anyway
- andybak 3y agoI disagree. I think someone unfamiliar with the field might easily go for the other meaning. Maybe 70/30%
- coldtea 3y agoSome added context: MIDI 2.0 is still not that widely supported (in hosts, plugins, etc). It's also not present in 99% of currently on the market hardware synths and music controllers etc you can buy, and it's available in 0% of older hardware. There's also MPE which adds some more expressive capabilities to existing MIDI hosts, plugins, and hardware, which has some (small still) adoption. MPE is an extension to MIDI 1.0 to add polyphonic expressivity, and a lot of companies have added it in an ad-hoc fashion (what it offers is within the bounds of MIDI 1.0 "extended" modes). So, unless you're living in the cutting edge, MIDI 2.0 will not be of much use for modern music production for the next few years at least.
- bubblesorting 3y agoThat was true a few years ago. The next few years are here :) take another look, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. E: that sounded like snark, definitely not the intention, Ableton supports MPE now and they were lagging behind. Roger Linn keeps a list of MPE/MIDI2 compatible software and hardware, every time I revisit it, the list has grow : https://www.rogerlinndesign.com/support/support-linnstrument-recommended-sounds https://www.rogerlinndesign.com/support/support-linnstrument...
- gcr 3y agocoldtea’s point is that MPE is backwards-compatible with MIDI, but MIDI 2.0 is not. Linn’s list appears to include MPE devices but I can’t find any mention of MIDI 2.0. I’m not sure why you’re calling this a list of “MPE/MIDI2 compatible” devices. It sounds like you’re saying that MIDI 2.0 is widely supported; do you have a list of MIDI2 devices on the market?
- coldtea 3y agoI'm talking about MIDI 2. MPE has better support, MIDI 2 not much atm.
- bubblesorting 3y agoOoooh, I thought MPE was the same as MIDI 2.0. Turns out it ain't. My bad!
- aprilnya 3y agoOr, just: MIDI 2.0 is a major overhaul to the widely-used MIDI protocol
- botanical 3y agoHow can the new 2.0 version be widely used? It's obvious from the text what is widely used...
