774, 993? Would that be recent enough for some myth, lore or even written record to exist of these events?
And on the subject of solar weather on the scale of the carrington event. What would actually happen? Most things I have seen leave it at "There was arcing in the telegraph lines... Imagine what would happen today" What would happen today? We have many magnitudes more electrical equipment. but it is better isolated and grounded. but it is more delicate. What are the mechanisms involved? is it like an EMP from a nuclear bomb? Are there any good papers that cover this with any sort of engineering integrity?

Cold booting the energy grid could take months, during which most of the country would be without power.
- ianburrell 3y agoCarrington event is very similar to EMP. The main difference is that solar flare lasts long enough to affect the whole world. The main effect is that it induces currents in long conductors. These days, that is mainly electrical wires. This causes wide scale power outages. The big problem is may damage transformers which are hard to replace. Things in house should be okay, but some might be damaged if not on surge protector. Electronics won’t be touched at all.
