It might feel like "the time has finally come to talk about alignment", but the truth is when people realize in 5 years that the current iteration of AI doesn't have all the effects you warn of, it'll make everyone even more wary of worries and we'll be less prepared than ever. Even if you believe this kind of hype, please cool your jets. In likelihood AI, like all research heavy tech, will appear to stagnate for a long time until new breakthroughs come through, because progress happens in fits and starts and not a smooth line. Hyping doomsday scenarios, even if possible, don't help us get more prepared at all.
