We Need to be Realistic about EVs
- WheelsAtLarge 3y ago"I absolutely do not believe in forcing sub-par and more expensive products on a populace in the name of reducing a tiny overall percentage of worldwide emissions at the cost of hundreds of billions of dollars." We know fossil fuels are damaging the environment so we need to do the change over to an alternative. waiting because EVs are inconvenient now is not a choice. The advantage of technology is that it gets better as we discover problems. But that can't happen unless we start. Also there's a subset of customers that can use the current EVs now without any difficulties. Why not go after those customers as the tech improves. EVs aren't perfect now but in time they will be.
- gsibble 3y agoThen why do we need mandates? Let the free market let those customers buy them.
- WheelsAtLarge 3y agoIt's a fallacy that the free market, on its own, will fix all economic and social woes. In this case, the fixed costs are so high that it's hard for any company to produce EVs without the government helping. The mandates will kickstart the sector. There will be a point where the companies will be able to survive at which time the mandates and governmental incentives will end. Also, the gas power car manufactures have reached "economy of scale" which makes those vehicles relatively cheap in comparison to EVs which means people will be attracted to the cheaper cars making it next to impossible for EVs to get a foothold. The mandates are a must to guide the industry in the right direction.
