It's not rudderless, there's just a large amount of angst surrounding AI/ML ranging from "more ways to feed the copyright trolls" to "what should I raise my kids to do for a starter career?" and a lot of interpolated points in between. You're totally okay not feeling this angst. But so are the folks who do.
