Palantir is a criminal organization that should have their corporate charter dissolved. Re-posting what their CEO says is enabling them. And there's especially no reason to listen to them on the topic of machine learning.
I agree there's no reason to "pause" anything but it's just a broken clock being right twice per day.
- jntvjnvutnuvt 3y agoThe irony of you advocating for Ukraine and then calling one of its main intelligence partners, whose product has helped save countless Ukrainian lives, a criminal organization.
- throwawayadvsec 3y agothe mob helped multiple governments during WW2
- humanistbot 3y agoSo by your logic, if someone supports entity A, and A is supported by entity B, there are no grounds to ever criticize entity B without also undermining support for entity A? This seems like the kind of team sports mentality that has destroyed politics.
- yanderekko 3y agoI would also argue that describing an organization as "criminal" based on allegations that only concern a small share of its overall scope of impact to also be reflective of poor rhetoric.
- lolive 3y agoPalantir is a solution provider for my company [Airbus]. We are reasonably satisfied with the product they provide us. Not being politically involved, and as a European not really aware of the action of Palantir in the US, could you elaborate on the « nastiness » of that Palantir?
- SushiHippie 3y agoAirbus uses Palantir Foundry, which I think is not that controversial. The controversial things everyone talks about are their other products like Gotham which is for the police/military. In germany it is Unconstitutional to use. Here is a german article about it: https://www.hessenschau.de/politik/warum-die-polizei-software-hessendata-von-palantir-so-problematisch-ist-v2,urteil-bundesverfassungsgericht-hessendata-100.html https://www.hessenschau.de/politik/warum-die-polizei-softwar...
- lolive 3y agoGood to know, thanks. [yes, we mostly use Foundry]
- ng12 3y agoFWIW Foundry isn't that much different than their government products. It's just a platform for data management and analysis.
- ng12 3y agoSo you're saying selling any sort of data analytics software to the government is a criminal act?
- Sporktacular 3y agoIf it breaks the laws of the land you can call it illegal. And without doubt immoral if it's used to mass control and surveil populations.
- ng12 3y agoImmorality is a tricky subject but the original commenter was specifically talking about illegality. Whatever your feelings about Palantir's business (and the defense contracting business as a whole) I don't think there's any convincing argument that Palantir is engaged in illegal or illicit business.
- cochne 3y agoCan you explain in what way Palantir is a criminal organization?
- dylanz 3y ago"Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive." and "Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something."
- CPLX 3y agoThe fact that Palantir is a criminal organization is plainly true and certainly substantive.
- yanderekko 3y ago>The fact that Palantir is a criminal organization is plainly true and certainly substantive. Perhaps it's plainly true in some trivial sense (all large orgs have committed some crimes), but not in any legally-relevant sense. Otherwise people have to explain the obvious incongruity between this "plain truth" and the obvious fact that Palantir is not facing the sort of legal problems that would be expected of a "criminal organization" (and no, saying "the US judiciary is just very very corrupt" is not a "plain truth" either.)
- mattdeboard 3y agoBetween this and your "well actually AI Armageddon is a more urgent danger than addressing climate crisis" comment I'm starting to think you're peter thiel's burner account
- jabradoodle 3y agoI could make similar comments about your account being more than 10 years old yet apparently you don't realise there is a preference for informed discussion on this site. By all means criticise away, by constructing an argument and preferably providing sources. Saying "X is bad" is cheap and does not further discussion or teach anyone. In fact, that kind of behaviour being normalised is the most susceptible to brigading and bot farms.
- GreedClarifies 3y agoLol, criminal. I do find that Karp sounds like a huckster, but criminal … sad that this got so many upvotes.
