“All other options and bullshit aside, this is why I hate Apple.”
- jamesy0ung 3y agoThe iPad would make a great Linux tablet. Relatively high performance processor, nice screen and a ton of them out there. If Apple just unlocked the bootloader, there would be plenty of motivation to develop a good linux port
- SoftTalker 3y agoBut Apple doesn’t make any money from that
- walterbell 3y agoMore than a few OSS hackers eventually want some devices that "just work", especially in the stage of their career where they have more money than time. This is Apple's primary value proposition. Apple went out of their way to enable non-Apple OSes on Apple Silicon Macbooks. They make money when someone buys a Macbook to run native or virtualized Linux.
- catboybotnet 3y agoWhich is why they tend to not support really anything in terms of users truly owning their devices. Buy a new one, toss that old one into the landfill! And again! And again...
- walterbell 3y agoApple devices with A5-A11 SoC, including iPad Mini 2, have an unpatchable bootrom hardware bug which enables research projects over tethered USB, https://github.com/topics/checkm8 https://github.com/topics/checkm8 & https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/06/developers-get-linux-up-and-running-on-old-ipad-air-2-hardware/ https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/06/developers-get-linux...
- z_man 3y agoSo someone gave it to you and you are complaining about it not doing what you want to do - what a first world whiner....
- not_your_vase 3y agoI bought my old (back then new) iPad 4 with my money, and despite having a great hardware, its software rendered it e-waste also years ago, without any actual reason beside "buy a new one". Is it better?
- garbagecoder 3y agoThat's not what the post was about. It was about him wanting to run Linux. Which I don't know if he can do, but I do know you can jailbreak those. Anyway, I think your reaction is the one he was looking for which is "hurr durr $my_os good $your_os bad"
- not_your_vase 3y agoI partially disagree. If Apple wouldn't be so adamant about dropping all support for old iOS versions (especially including forbidding accessing historical AppStore content), this would be a non-issue, based on the first picture.
- richardjam73 3y agoMy first gen ipad still works and the apps on it mostly work.
- captn3m0 3y agoYou had to have installed those apps back then. You can’t install old versions of apps if now, so you’re stuck with the apps you installed then. (I use a second Gen iPad).
- not_your_vase 3y agoWhat captn3m0 said + try to open Twitter in Safari... (okay, one could argue that it is 50% forced obsolescence from Apple, and 50% utter garbage frontend work from Twitter, made by "professional" "software" "engineers")
- 000ooo000 3y agoLame clickbait title. Saving you a click: >All other options and bullshit aside, THIS is why I hate Apple. >Someone gave me this perfectly good condition ipad mini and it's completely useless because apple won't update it AND won't unlock the bootloader so I can install something else on it. >Terrible.
- trelane 3y agoIt's the first line from the tweet. I was looking for something to summarize it, since there was no title, and that seemed appropriate. There is a huge discussion beyond that, some of which is interesting.
- brailsafe 3y agoSomewhat ironically, the only iPad I ever bought was my iPad 3, which I still have on the last supported iOS which is I think version 9, and I just just as much value out of it now as I ever did. Reading Pocket articles and... So I haven't bought another one. Even though I like the hardware as an input device, much like TikTok, it doesn't seem for me
