What about the Default Mode Network (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Default_mode_network#Function https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Default_mode_network#Function)? This comprises the regions of the brain responsible for our sense of self, including our internal monologue and personal memories. It's most active when we're not engaged in any complex tasks, and least active when we're "in the zone", or meditating, or tripping on psychedelics (which, in high doses, cause ego dissolution).
