This is neat anyhoot!
- layer8 3y agoThe animated elements are line drawings. The drawings are transferred to transparent sheets, and the shapes between the lines are then colored in with paint on the back side (so as to not overpaint the lines). You wouldn’t call the result a painting. Background art is often painted. Look up “cel animation”.
- dmbche 3y agoThank you! My misunderstanding, I had forgotten cell shading.
- autoexec 3y ago> You wouldn’t call the result a painting. I don't see why not. The backgrounds are painted. Other things that move get outlined first (something painters do all the time on canvas) and then, as you say, are also painted. These paintings are then composited together to make a single frame, but it's still all just paintings. You could argue that for it to count each frame would have to be a single painting, but then I'd argue that rotoscoping entire frames of film would also count. Undone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undone_(TV_series) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undone_(TV_series)) might count as well. It's rotoscoping placed over oil painted backgrounds.
