Maybe this is the problem. You aren't going to great usage from it by "toying" with it. It's still early stages, and everyone is experimenting. My guess is that these tools will become more useful as we figure out how to use them as a true "copilot" rather than a grunt. What this will look like, will likely be different for everyone, and it will come with practice.
One odd example for me, is that I feel like I get as much value out of writing prompts than I do with getting output. Maybe more in some cases. Prompt writing has been a bit of a hack for me, to overcome the blank page barrier which many use the response for. That prompt may also set enough of an initial sketch that I'm going to stay true to my original idea rather than latching on to the first thing which comes out of the response. The responses may then have ideas that I can build on myself. Or I can prompt for a rabbit hole dive into one of those ideas.
So, maybe these tools are best for helping by passing the sketch pad back and forth to show different possible paths. I start the sketch, the tooling branches off with it. Maybe the response furthers the sketch. Maybe the response fills in a bit more detail on my portion of the sketch.
What I don't want to do, is to tell the tooling to create the entire drawing (unless we're literally talking about image generation.)
