Up until not long ago there would be plenty of post here saying how Google is useless and how appending `site:reddit.com` to any query was the only way to get decent results.
This thread is all about how bad reddit is, as if their content has disappeared. They don't need defense but I'm amazed at how volatile people's opinions are.
- lolinder 3y agoIt's always important to keep in mind that HN is big and any given thread attracts a different group of people. What appears to be volatility of opinions is actually volatility of who is participating.
- spencerchubb 3y agoI am one of those people who loved reddit before. Now I see it as a laughing stock. My opinion is volatile due to a volatile change in policy. It's that simple.
- drain 3y agoAt least part of the difference is that Reddit can be a useful forum for technical troubleshooting of apps / programs. But the dissent in the thread is in reference to it as a social media platform - I think.
- plewd 3y agoExactly this, it happens to have a long history of questions/answers for most topics, so I pretty much use it as a search engine. OTOH Reddit as a social media seems like a dumpster fire with a toxic culture, community, and mods. (Not talking about all subs here, I know that many subs are wholesome and inviting)
- somsak2 3y agoIt's sort of like the Chinese government vs. Chinese people. I can hate what the government does without any malice towards a Chinese person. Same thing going on here -- the content that is produced by Reddit users is still just as valuable even if the leadership are bozos. Nobody is claiming that Reddit content itself has somehow instantly gotten worse.
