‘Hold off from having kids’ warns AI expert Mo Gawdat
- constantcrying 3y agoCompletely insane. But to be honest, I don't think anybody changes his mind on having kids based on the oppinions of some "AI expert".
- catchnear4321 3y agowhile the headline is clickbait, and the so called expert is high on their own supply, the harm caused by such statements is difficult to measure. but very real.
- sfn42 3y agoI have yet to see someone explain how a GPT will cause our extinction. God damn this tech is so insanely overrated.
- constantcrying 3y agoYudkowski is one of the people making the strongest case for this. What he believes isn't that ChatGPT is dangerous, but that self improving AI will lead to more quickly self improving AI, which ultimately becomes uncontrollable. Personally this is far too much like science fiction and the whole "research field" suffers from an enormous lack of "showing the code".
- sfn42 3y agoYeah i know that that's the idea, i just don't really understand how a computer program i wrote that runs on my computer could become "uncontrollable". I can just shut it down whenever i want to. As far as I know it's not as if this is a real thing at this point anyway, we just have shit like ChstGPT which takes some input and produces some output. It's not sitting around doing stuff on its own time, it doesn't have agency. It isn't thinking or planning or anything, it's just a piece of software that does what it's told. "But people can use the tech for mean stuff" yeah well they already have nukes, i don't see us writing code that's worse than nukes any time soon.
- constantcrying 3y agoThe entire sector suffers from a lack of "show me the code". I absolutely agree that right now the gap between the science fiction stories and LLMs is quite huge.
- z5h 3y agoChatGPT can give plausible problematic scenarios where you (admittedly) cannot. Reflect on that.
- sfn42 3y agoNot really sure what you're saying. The LLM is capable of parroting doomsayings from text it's trained on? Yeah that does not come as any kind of surprise. Maybe you want to bring up a point, something concrete that we can actually talk about? Because this vague appeal to authority (where the "authority" is a notorious liar) isn't very convincing.
- z5h 3y agoI’m suggesting you’re not a position to make claims about a system, that in its infancy, can outperform you (most of us) in many ways. Especially if, in your opening argument, you admit being unable to think of scenarios instead of doing the work to conceive of plausible scenarios.

- raxxorraxor 3y agoChat GPT is impressive in my opinion, but I am still far more amazed by solid diffusion and what people do with it. In practice Chat GPT is mostly used to reformulate some texts or generate spam from my experience. Perhaps some companies use it for service and that is slightly dystopian. I tend to get angry when I have to chat with a bot, even if this one would be far more eloquente. It also can tell you convincing facts that might be completely wrong.
- sfn42 3y agoYeah ChatGPT is great. Really cool tech. I just don't think it's going to change or take over the world, or take people's jobs. It's far too unreliable. People don't understand that it's just a text generator. It can't really solve problems and stuff, it just produces some text that seems to make sense in a given context. No matter how much they improve it or add more training data or whatever i don't see how they can change that. Seems to me it's already past it's limit in terms of resource requirements etc.
