i heard about this related book recently -- it says we had (at time of publishing i guess, 2017) almost 1,000 US military bases -- semi-officially, at least, but that are probably hundreds or even thousands of semi/secret bases/outposts that are not counted in the offical records (from the Pentagon, etc.).
