R/DevOps Migration?
Hi yall! Moving over from r/devops. I've heard some would like to move the devops community over to here. As well as maybe to old.reddit.com? Thoughts? The current plan is for the subreddit to go, potentially, indefinitely down. There's not a whole lot of consensus yet. But I'd be curious, what would it look like if we did move devops over here? Would there be topics? What sorts of organization could there be?
Thanks all!
- codingdave 3y agoI'm sure the people would be welcomed into discussions here, but you should not expect the features or culture of HN to change for you. HN is what it is. It also doesn't make sense to "move" to old.reddit.com. That is still the same reddit, just with a different skin.
- suberdoo 3y agoYeah judging by the layout I don't think this would be a good replacement for the community as a whole.
- comprev 3y agoHN greatest selling point is variety and quality content to match. It's not a niche community focused on one area of tech (/r/DevOps, /r/NetSec, /r/LearnPython, etc). Depending on how much "influence" you have on /r/DevOps, it might be worth either a new platform "rdevops.com" or joining an existing well established base (StackOverflow). Remember, anyone can initiate the move elsewhere but the winner will be the one which the content producers actually follow.
- hayst4ck 3y agoWith the downfall of Reddit, the best thing to do might be to beg the powers that be to opensource HN (is it already open source?) with all of the anti-abuse and moderating considerations gutted out. Reddit itself is basically a syndicator of what used to be old forums. Probably be pretty trivial to self host something for devops.
- ezekg 3y agoThere’s https://github.com/lobsters/lobsters https://github.com/lobsters/lobsters, which can be forked into an r/$sub replacement.
- alrs 3y agoMoving back to USENET makes sense for the devops community.
- suberdoo 3y agoI am big dumb when it comes to online forums so i'd have to research how to even get access to usenet. Besides that, I think discord server has been floated as well
- joenot443 3y agoYou work in devops?
- re-thc 3y ago> Besides that, I think discord server has been floated as well That's a giant mess free-for-all though. You can't search or have proper structured posts / discussions. The comments just keep going bling bling.
- alrs 3y agoIf people can't figure out USENET and need consumer-gamer stuff like Discord, I wonder what "devops" ever meant.

- geekodour 3y agoI am not aware of what's the opinion of the devops community for the stack exchange sites but they have so many niche sites think they could use a migration but the content of /r/devops and these sites is significantly different plus i am not sure of the recent ai content removal thing will be adding complications to this https://stackexchange.com/sites https://stackexchange.com/sites
- sathyabhat 3y agoThere’s a DevOps Stack Exchange as well. https://devops.stackexchange.com/ https://devops.stackexchange.com/ That said SE makes for a poor subReddit replacement as a subreddit usually focuses on discussion/link sharing which is not what SE wants.
