I feel your angst. I'm not in an area that's quite as caught up with the idea everyone has access to a smart phone, but still there's public services I'd like to access but I need to set up a smart phone. I'm not going down the road where I need to voluntarily prostrate myself for well meaning people who can't build or afford to hire someone else to have a good all round access web site to do the same ... if not better ... well of course a non tamper app on android (I've not idea what the story is with apple) takes away the ability for someone to block data scraping. I have a simple rule, if x can't build a web site (that I could use with a mere simple laptop) ... I don't trust their app.
