Solar obviously "works" if it has the surrounding infrastructure, like storage and weather. Hopefully green energy subsidies can end soon.
- jackmott42 3y agoHopefully fossil fuel subsidy ends before green ones do, they are much more expensive.
- constantcrying 3y agoAbsolutely, use them for nuclear.
- mikeyouse 3y agoNuclear already sees a massive amount of subsidies, it's not clear that more would move the needle in any useful way.
- constantcrying 3y agoWhere I live there are no subsidies for nuclear, as the country is far too developed for that technology and now relies on coal, together with some seasonal sun and wind.
- pfdietz 3y agoThe worst case of all renewable equipment being landfilled would be acceptable. Any recycling would just be icing on the cake. Also, the materials going into renewable infrastructure powering society will be small compared to materials going into society as a whole. If recycling can be done on the latter, it could be done on the former. If it can't be done on the latter, the former wouldn't matter. And the recycling on general materials is a problem that comes up even in a nuclear-powered society.
- constantcrying 3y agoIf my optimistic math is right you need around a dozen solar pannels per person. If a third of energy is supposes to come from solar around a billion sollar pannels are needed. If you don't think longevity and recyclability matters on that scale, I think you should reconsider what "sustainable" means.
- pfdietz 3y agoMy point is that it's not an argument against renewables per se. If industrial society powered by nuclear (or unicorn farts) is sustainable, it implies recycling is either unnecessary or solvable.
- constantcrying 3y agoI think environmental impact by producing billions of pannels of landfill is actually an argument against solar. I am not against solar, by the way, but it is obviously an important consideration.
- pfdietz 3y agoYou are selective in your concern. Is industrial society as a whole ok? It will produce much more waste that needs recycling that solar/wind will. If it is ok, then why would solar/wind not be? This smells of bad faith argumentation.
- constantcrying 3y ago>You are selective in your concern. No. > It will produce much more waste that needs recycling that solar/wind will. And that is bad. > it is ok, then why would solar/wind not be? Not at all the question. Two things can be bad at the same time.

- standardUser 3y agoGreen subsidies can end when the mission is accomplished (saluting guy emoji)
- constantcrying 3y agoHow bad faith can you get?
