Thats a good point, I guess technically they did the same thing with Apple Silicone where we all knew new mac's were coming. So it isn't entirely unprecedented, but I don't ever remember them even hinting at future Watches, iPhones, etc when announcing a current one. Maybe the iPhone X being an exception when they talked about it being the future of iPhone.
