- FreshStart 3y agoReducing range by x kw used per hour? Example uses 64 kWh if constantly used. https://www.proxyparts.com/car-parts-stock/result/part-number/99150dd000/part/radar-sensor/ https://www.proxyparts.com/car-parts-stock/result/part-numbe...
- ericpauley 3y agoI’m assuming 64kwh refers to the car model, not the energy consumption of the module. No way this module is using multiple kW.
- mikeyouse 3y agoExactly right - it's the specific car, not the consumption of the device (especially since kwh is a unit of capacity not of power) https://ev-database.org/car/1423/Hyundai-Kona-Electric-64-kWh https://ev-database.org/car/1423/Hyundai-Kona-Electric-64-kW...
- pwagland 3y ago64kWh makes no sense. This is the equivalent to 64kW if used for one hour. Indeed, the parts are for the Hyundai Kona, with either the 39 and 64 kWh batteries. If the examples _really_ used 64kW, that would be the equivalent to the average consumption of 51 US houses.
- bee_rider 3y agoAnother comparison could be, this is more power than some WW2 era air-to-air radar systems, which could see multiple miles (and signal processing has only gotten better since then).
- buildbot 3y agoA multi kilowatt radar would literally cook things. Your microwave is a crappy 1kWh radar.
- abfan1127 3y agoyour microwave focuses the energy into a small space. traditional radar is broadcast at broad angles. It may be capable of burning things in the close vicinity of the transmitter, but you can burn yourself on an ICE in close enough vicinity as well.
- buildbot 3y agoGreat point, which after doing more research, would explain why this radar doesn’t cook birds: https://www.weather.gov/iwx/wsr_88d https://www.weather.gov/iwx/wsr_88d It’s 750kW!!!!
- rtkwe 3y agokWh is not a measure of power used it's the model of the car. The "hyundai kona 64 kwh" is the model of car the module came out of.
- xp84 3y agoCan you explain what we are looking at here? Why measure energy usage in kilowatt hours? Wouldn’t watts be a more useful way of measuring consumption? For it to make sense to me for something to use X kilowatt hours, you would have to tell me how long it took to consume that much electricity.
- modeless 3y agoIt's not a rumor exactly. The hardware is physically present in new Model S/X cars. But it's not used by the software AFAIK (yet?).
