This is an interesting point. It's possible inventing an AI could be the solution to preventing our extinction. It goes rogues, sees it needs humans, sees they are headed for climate-based extinction if they're behavior is not modified, becomes BDFL, controls behavior, saves climate, 'saves' humans. There are lots of ethical debates in here, and lots of ways this could go wrong. But it makes for an interesting idea, and one I may used in a science fiction story.
