I thought they already proved that the faster-than-light neutrino was due to relativity between the GPS satellite, the origin, and the destination? Did I just hallucinate that?
- rubidium 15y agoAFAIK, that was what someone suggested as a source of error, but that was never proved or supported. So... yes?
- learc83 15y agoFrom what I read, that was just a suggestion from someone's blog that showed up on HN and reddit as if it was an accepted fact due to a poorly worded headline.
- sliverstorm 15y agoIt was suggested repeatedly, and it was then repeatedly mentioned that GPS already takes relatively into account.
- didgeoridoo 15y agoThis comment got me wondering how important it is for navigation to take into account relativistic time dilation in GPS. Apparently: very. Turns out that ignoring it would cause a drift in position of about 10km/day. http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~pogge/Ast162/Unit5/gps.html http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~pogge/Ast162/Unit5/gps....
- platz 15y agonice dig!
- DanBC 15y agoMETA - why is nathnb's comment being down-voted? (It's not rude or aggressive or meme-spewing or vapid "me too" / "plus one".)
- andrewflnr 15y agoI think because it's sort of factually incorrect (the GPS-based theories hadn't been substantiated), which makes its sarcasm hard to take. PS: Meant to upvote, but hit the wrong button. Sorry.
- lepton 15y agoI didn't downvote, but nathnb's comment isn't adding anything to the discussion. It's a personal aside about some confusion he is having; his last question especially emphasizes that aspect. But I see that several other comments at that level were also downvoted.
