They also avoided the metaverse & augmented reality traps.
Vision is solidly positioned as a spatial OS. Unconnected. Not virtual. Just space.
I think eventually it comes back around & metaverse/AR have huge potential. But being a good computer seems like the most important first step.
- deafpolygon 3y agoVision _needs_ to be about apps, in order to be profitable. In order to be useful, it needs apps. Who is going to use it _just_ to talk to an AI assistant? Apple learned its lesson with Siri- no one uses it. No one really uses Bing after a while, and who is Bard, again? AI is not a profitable venture right now, and going all-in too early is going to be costly with very little upside.
- prepend 3y ago> Apple learned its lesson with Siri- no one uses it Is this true? I think Siri is very much used. I use it every day, but for basic stuff like setting alarms and reminders or turning on lights. I rarely use it for open ended questions. I think it’s just because it’s hard to see usage numbers as Apple doesn’t publish queries per day (and they don’t even know because of the way Siri works). If I set 500 alarms a day, only I know that. You’d have to run an old fashioned survey to ask people their habits. So I suspect the lesson Apple learned is that Siri is much used and they are doing more “edge AI” that’s used but doesn’t have telemetry. Back in 2020, Siri was used at least 25 billion times a day. [0] [0] https://voicebot.ai/2020/06/22/apple-still-in-holding-pattern-on-voice-siri-used-25-billion-times-per-month-but-new-features-limited/ https://voicebot.ai/2020/06/22/apple-still-in-holding-patter... “ Yael Garten, director, Siri data science and engineering said that Siri was used for 25 billion requests each month. If you assume that there are about one billion iPhone users and they represent the majority of Siri usage, then you are talking about an average use of 25 times per month. That would represent almost daily use. However, at least half of iPhone users don’t use Siri at all so it may be more accurate to say that Siri users are averaging about two times daily. Siri may not win many plaudits for its capabilities but that is apparently not undermining widespread use.“
- detaro 3y agoIndeed. The bigger commercial problem with voice assistants seems to be that they aren't used in profitable ways (for the makers of the assistants), not that they aren't used.
- prepend 3y agoBut I think that’s a huge selling point for Siri (vs Alexa or Google Assistant). I don’t want my local AI to be monetized. I read Ender’s Game as a kid and have been wishing for Jane. Imagine Jane being called a failure because it didn’t phone home enough or generate enough revenue. Hopefully our future has an open source AI that’s built by people with a humanitarian aspect and the money comes from the hardware to run it in something I wear or implant. The dystopian view is that Jane only recommends who wins the ad auction. Or answers the question based on whether Russia or China pay the most for SEO disinformation.
- deafpolygon 3y agoJust because Apple doesn't monetize it in the same way as Google or Amazon, doesn't mean they aren't collecting ungodly amounts of data on its customers.
- prepend 3y agoThey say they aren’t and don’t have a history like Google and Amazon. I don’t trust them completely, but I give them more trust than Google where their business model is contingent on collecting these data from everything they can.
- deafpolygon 3y ago> Hopefully our future has an open source AI Well, open source needs to be built by users for that to be a successful future. Right now, the bulk of 'open source' is "open core" - where the vast majority of development is driven by corporations. I'm a big supporter of open source, but let's face reality - software is increasingly complex and hobbyists need to put food on the table. There's little room in between these days.
