There Is No Web3
- developer-dao 3y agoRecent article from a Developer DAO Member sharing their opinion on Web3's Identity Crisis. Their conclusion: There is no Web3. There is only the Web.
- k__ 3y agoPeople (pro and anti Web3) can't even decide what's part of it and what isn't. Probably a good idea if we just let the term die.
- developer-dao 3y agoIt's almost like we're trying to make it harder for people to understand Like with software, end users don't get about version numbers unless their developers, literally no average web user cares what "Version" of the web their on, it's just the web. Just create a better product/experience that provides real benefits and the people will come
- eimrine 3y ago> Web 1: read-only static > Web 2: read write dynamic > Web 3: read write trust verifiable Isn't it obvious that a "trust" is just a bullshit and "verifiable" is not a promise of blockchains. The promise of blockchain is undeleteness. If talking about surveillance on Internets called in fancy words - we use to have it everywhere already without any cryptocurrencies and/or cryptocurrency-inspired stuff.
- developer-dao 3y agoTotally agree. People didn't start using web2 because people called it web2, they used it because it was better and provided a better end user experience. I wonder how much pushing web3 just confuses the average user versus just better communicating the actual benefits for these features being added to the web by web3. Only developers care about version numbers
- eimrine 3y ago> People didn't start using web2 because people called it web2, they used it because it was better I would like to clarify that the meaning of "it" and "web2" from your comment is just a clever use of XMLHttpRequest aka AJAX. It changed web so much that AJAXfull websites are called web2 and AJAXless websites are called web1. I do not see any big impact to the web from those websites/apps/protocols which use blockchain or any cryptocurrency-inspired stuff. The real third version of web (from my opinion) is when websites use to show you endless number of notifications which can be divided in two groups: 1/2: go install our app of get off from our website (with significant change in browser software consequently - no tabs, no ability to set font size, no browser extensions and no visible browser at all). If you are not from smartphone, at least go install our notifications which make your browser running after closing it because of our webapp's spam. 2/2: notice that government use to guard your safety. GDPR, app store's and play market's policies, KYC/AML, limited and surveillanced use of bank cards as the only legal way of transaction of funds. As a result, Web3 is not something about crypto-fairytale-future, it is about spying. It is about non-free software everywhere, forced upgrades of everyting, all your data can be erased by big corps, IoT where S stands for security and a phone number verification everywhere.
- turbofish 3y ago"For a futurist or visionary, Web3 is all about how Tim Berners-Lee's original concept of a semantic Web has evolved from being read-only to now read-write and soon read-write-trust-verify." The entire point of having a blockchain is to not trust, but rather to verify independently -- these terms are contradictory to one another. In other words, removing single points of failure and control is the mission. While many projects are moving farther from these ideals, recent ongoings in the U.S with the SEC will cause the industry to hearken back to our roots as cypherpunks: the reason we began the fight for privacy and the freedom to transact in the first place. Blockchains introduce the notion of digital ownership in such a way that we need NOT be forced to rely on third parties to verify the state of the chain. Accordingly, I would amend the statement to say "read-write-own". We're not "just adding to the web", we're immortalizing our culture and ideals too.
