- duck 3y ago@keyle saw this coming: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36120868 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36120868
- orionblastar 3y agoThe history of Tetris is really complex. Atari and Nintendo claimed ownership of it, and Spectrum Holobytes did as well. Is this Tetris company selling Tetris or is it a patent troll that sues competitors?
- duck 3y agoLooks to be owned by the creator of Tetris, Alexey Pajitnov and was formed in 1996. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tetris_Company https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tetris_Company
- orionblastar 3y agoSo he didn't sell the rights to Tetris after all?
- beardyw 3y agoThe issue seems to be: .. sound trademark registrations throughout the world for the Russian folk song that plays during Tetris I would understand this to be for an actual recording, or at least a distinctive reproduction. Couldn't Setris just use a different tune?
- fanrco 3y agoFunny enough, before the takedown I was working on my own Javascript version of the game to make it more accessible to people who don't like downloading games. As soon as I bought sandtris.com and posted the game, I noticed that the original got DMCA'd. Seems like it was just because of him copying the trademarked song and logo. Hopefully I'm still in the clear.
- hippy_dave 3y agoDon't use "-tris" in the name. That's something they've gone after a lot in the past. Shame you already bought the domain... If the game name doesn't sound too close to Tetris and doesn't contain the music (really, trademarked a folk song? gross), this game will be fine and legal, whether your remake or the original.
