I don't get the subject of the suit. Is it that people can't cross private property to get to public land? Can someone explain?

  Consider a chessboard. A white space at the centre surrounded by eight squares, four white on the corners, four black on the edges. I own the black squares. The white squares are public lands. How can one cross from the outside white squares to the inside one without passing through my land or its air rights?
