I might supply my own anecdotes on low balling software talent and the subtle, pervasive ill-effects it comes with and the management structure that shapes it, but it wouldn't add much.
I see this same cost cutting (greedy shorterism) in other ways too:
- off shoring support. One of my colleagues is dealing with more and more far east workers. The result? Not pretty. Poor US/UK ppl are having to work early/late (or vice versa) for the time difference.
- manufacturing that moved too much core stuff to China. Thankfully that's shifting back.
- I'm always disheartened when I see corporations fail to own (besides good employee hiring and retention) other facets of their business farming out to third parties:
- harassment training
- cost cutting recommendations and other restructuring
- various facets of QA data collection and reporting
It tells me these companies don't really think they know what they're doing or they are driven by fear/politics. It's never a good sign in my book
