An ungratifying review of classical considerations.
TL;DR: life eats and shits to maintain order in an existential reality destined for exhaustion through heat dissipation.
There are a few propositions warranting review updating these aged yet simple truths.
Firstly, a revised definition of entropy which satisfies both classical physics and information theory.
Entropy is the distribution of potential over negative potential. Whether heat dissipation or chaotic exchange, what is happening is the distribution of potential (whatever or whichever) over negative potential (spacial expansion and thermal equilibrium.)
Inverse square laws, manifold spacial distribution, or merely “where is it?” over “where might it be?”
One short sight modern information theory makes in defining entropy as “the number of possible states in a system”, is that entropy includes all inconceivable outcomes (cosmic rays, cosmic giggle factor, unknown variables, etc.) Shannon’s classical equations regarding the electron distribution over the valence potential is a discrete thought experiment. An electron may raise shelves and leave the valence entirely through excitation beyond this variable account.
Entropy is therefore the distribution of potential over negative potential (Shannon’s example is pragmatically as much.)
Life is biochemical machinery which consumes an enormous amount of energy to maintain stability. A losing battle which checks itself with mortality to counter the inevitable structural decay (how suck all would it be for all life to eventually die of cancer?)
Stability is merely that which requires more energy to undo than the energy required to sustain (a bargain which fails in even the slightest extremity.)
Entropy and life are inextricably linked, yet better definitions may help us suss greater potential than the standard resolve.
