Keep in mind that when you're talking about the Ivys, they admit a tiny fraction of the people who apply and a huge number of people don't bother applying because (probably correctly) they don't think it's likely they'd get in. Behavior 3-4 std dev out may be quite a bit different than behavior at the median.
