Japan has a wild idea to launch a satellite made of wood in 2024
- DirectorKrennic 3y agoWood has a deeper history than people realize. The USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, had its aft main shaft strut bearings made of wood. Wood has been used as propellor shaft bearings in conventional ships, and hydroelectric plants dating back to the 1920s have used it in the bearings for their turbines. https://www.core77.com/posts/25224/lignum-vitae-wood-so-bad-ass-its-used-to-make-shaft-bearings-for-nuclear-submarines-and-more-25224 https://www.core77.com/posts/25224/lignum-vitae-wood-so-bad-...

- mrpotato 3y ago> If in fact wood turns into a truly viable alternative for satellite manufacturing, it does have some potential benefits compared to the typical metal alloys used in today’s constructions. For one, it is more environmentally friendly, across the board. It is easier, cheaper and cleaner to produce, and is much more disposable when it comes to a satellite's end-of-life. There's no mention of how a wooden satellite would compare to a "standard" satellite in terms of weight. Would they be similar?
