- doublerabbit 3y agoCould you apply this to Discord currently? As in they are in the beginning phase of the enshittifcation metamorphism? With the new soundboards, change of usernames and the likes, it's feels like it's starting the cycle.
- Macha 3y agoYes. The first warning shot for me was when they pushed stages really invasively in the UI to compete with clubhouse. I'd thought the high rate of nitro subscribership might have stalled it longer, but no.
- wkat4242 3y agoGo for something really open and free like Matrix. That's the only way to protect against eventual enshittification.
- bee_rider 3y agoMaybe I’m just old, but I don’t know what the inevitable pre-enshittified competition to Discord is. Do they exist yet? Discord is still at the beginning of the endhittification path so I guess it is not a super pressing issue.

- WorldPeas 3y agoit's probably either matrix or revolt, however I'd say matrix is the more mature/stable of the two
- TeMPOraL 3y agoFunny how this reply also makes sense if you don't know that "discord", "matrix" and "revolt" are used as brand names here.
- WorldPeas 3y agofunnier yet because matrix's old name used to be riot so it would be "riot or revolt". They really like their violent names don't they. Whatever happened to subtle names like teamspeak or mumble
- bee_rider 3y agoIt will be interesting to see what the enshitification process looks like for distributed/open source chat programs.
- WorldPeas 3y agoit'll likely be at least somewhat thwarted by forking(one hopes).
- zeekaran 3y agoMatrix can replace the 1-1 and group chat function of Discord, but you would need Zulip to replace the Slack/Teams group forum function. And having them separately kinda kills the whole idea, doesn't it? That's not including that neither have screensharing. Not even sure if they have group audio.
- bee_rider 3y agoIt wouldn’t be the end of the world to have a bundle of independent open source packages held together by shims and glue.
