"I don't understand how a popular product like Reddit has so atrociously bad UI"
Do you mean like... HN?
- lawn 3y agoDespite it's flaws, HN has a far superior user experience compared to Reddit. It's not even comparable.
- taytus 3y agoSo? I wan't comparing HN with Reddit. I meant that HN is very popular without having an amazing user experience, specially on mobile.
- kevviiinn 3y agoFor me HN is nearly unusable on mobile without a client
- atyppo 3y agoHN is popular within certain demographics and tends to have somewhat circular discussions as a result. As someone who works in finance in NYC, I know nobody else who reads it. I imagine if I worked in tech in Redwood City, I might think differently.
- bee_rider 3y agoHN is fine on mobile. It’s just text anyway. It is easy to reflow text.
- dghlsakjg 3y agoI’m using it on mobile right now, works great. Has all of the same features as desktop. What is your complaint about mobile?
- zulban 3y agoHN is missing lots of features. That's not UI. The HN UI is pretty good.
- Sakos 3y agoI'd say his comment is the perfect example of why Reddit's new UI is the way it is. Features = good UI, apparently.
- interestica 3y agoDo you use HN on mobile?
- yellowapple 3y agoI do, and it's fine. Not ideal (things like the vote arrows are hard to hit with fingers, as the most egregious example), but still vastly better than the average "mobile" website. I'm typing this comment on a third-party app (Hacki) I'm trying out for the first time, so that's another option.
- interestica 3y agoThe vote arrows -- if that's an essential part of the UI, why is it so bad? And text sizing for mobile varies greatly by mobile device -- why?
- bee_rider 3y agoOn iOS at least you can just change the text size in safari. HN respects the user setting. Sites that try to overdo their UI tend to screw this up somehow. The arrows could be better, but they aren’t actually an essential part of the site from an individual user point of view. They are there to help HN. If they decided that getting this help from mobile users isn’t a priority, that’s fine.
- zirgs 3y agoYes, and it works fine.
- dredmorbius 3y agoCould you point to specific deficiencies of HN?
- bug21512 3y agoIt doesn't support proper pagination for comments, and has been promised as an upcoming feature for years.
- pb7 3y agoCan you explain what you mean by proper pagination? It breaks up comments into multiple pages so it must be something else.
- twic 3y agoNo pagination, as mentioned. No way to keep up with new comments on a post (Reddit doesn't have this either). No notifications on reply, so it's difficult to get answers to clarifying questions (/threads helps but isn't it). Ever-increasing indentation makes deep threads hard to read. Generally hard to read and hard to click on mobile. None fatal, but also none particularly tough to fix!
- Sebb767 3y ago> No notifications on reply I'm pretty sure this is intentional in order to avoid shallow discussions and not grab too much attention. I actually like this, but I agree with you that it can make it harder to get answers sometimes and you do miss some replies, on especially older comments.
- swores 3y ago> No pagination, as mentioned. Not sure what you mean by this, the lists of posts are very obviously paginated, as (admittedly a bit awkwardly) are larger comments threads. Maybe you mean auto-scrolling pagination? > No notifications on reply, so it's difficult to get answers to clarifying questions (/threads helps but isn't it). While not a HN feature, there is a simple solution - http://www.hnreplies.com/ http://www.hnreplies.com/
- JohnFen 3y agoHN's UI is pretty close to ideal for the sort of site it is.
