Do you actually need tabs though? First thing I do after installing VSCode is usually getting rid of the tabs and just use the file tree and "opening files" pane (recently got rid of that too because you can just invoke its popup with a hotkey). What annoys me more is that stupid minimap that somehow has become an enabled by default "feature" on modern editors.
