FreeBSD/Linux can boot faster without license outputing to serial port
- ggm 3y agoIt should be possible to boot both from "please, just use this config" instead of the probe cycle. That said, I "get" that many edge devices and components need blobs and resetting to a base state. I live in a world where SCSI settling time is a fact of life (in the rack) But it seems many chip based, FPGA based systems components also need this settling time. Seems a bit .. sad. I truly don't see why kernel boot is so serialised sometimes. Yes, you want to be ABLE to. But you also want to not HAVE to. My car boots pretty fast. I trust it. My phone should boot faster than it does. I love that booting now includes "oh hai, this CPU has faults, lets patch around this in some ring-0 state before we quit into less awesome run levels and forget we did this" -its like the Dec System-10 UUO function: add these instructions we forgot about/miscoded/oops
